Note: Fred Harvey opened his department store on Church Street in Nashville, Tenn., in 1942. Five floors of merchandise with air conditioning, the first escalator in Nashville. The Monkey Bar and Carousel had a full size carousel. Circus theme continued with real live monkeys in cages. Mr. Harvey would let the monkeys run loose in the store if business was slow. Live talking mynah birds and funhouse mirrors completed the circus theme. Slogan was Harvey's, The Fun Place To Shop. Closed c. 1980. (Not to be confused with Fred Harvey, the entrepreneur who developed the Harvey House lunch rooms, restaurants and hotels).
