Notes: Carson Pirie Scott, the famous Chicago department store, was located at 1 S. State Street. This building, erected in the 1899, was added to the National Historic Register in 1970.

A grand dame of Chicago retailing, Carson Pirie Scott & Co. operates about 30 department stores located mostly in Illinois, but also in Indiana. The mid-tier retailer is owned by The Bon-Ton Stores, which acquired Carson Pirie Scott along with about 110 other stores under the the Bergner's, Boston Store, Herberger's, and Younkers names from Saks Inc in 2006. Founded in 1854, Carson Pirie Scott was bought in 1989 by P.A. Bergner & Co., operator of the Bergner's and Boston Store chains. After a trip through Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, P.A. Bergner took the Carson Pirie Scott name. The company was bought in 1998 by Proffitt's, which was later renamed Saks Inc.
